When it comes to Gettleman the question many are asking is why doesn’t he have the job already?
He was a personnel director with the Giants from 1999 until 2012 when he left to take the general manager job in Carolina. In 2013 and 2014, he helped put the finishing touches on the Panthers that led to a 15-1 season in 2015 and an appearance in Super Bowl 50.
There was surprise around the league when Gettleman was suddenly fired by the Panthers only days prior to the start of 2017 training camp. He continues to be a well-respected talent evaluator who also earned points for sticking with two-time NFL Coach of the Year Ron Rivera when taking over the Panthers from Marty Hurney, rather than insisting on bringing in his own guy.
Because of his recent success in Carolina, history with the Giants and still current familiarity with NFL personnel preparing for free agency as well as having done early work on this year’s draft class in Carolina, Gettleman remains the over-whelming favorite to land the Giants job, we hear.
