There are still some key pieces in place for a defense that ranked 12th in fantasy scoring last year, first in 2016 and second in 2015. Eric Berry, a big-play safety and the heart and soul of this unit, is expected to be ready for Week One after rupturing his Achilles in last yearís season opener. OLB Justin Houston has been plagued by injuries in recent years but had 9.5 sacks last season and can still put heat on quarterbacks. Bob Sutton is a proven defensive coordinator whoís capable of making the most out of the talent on hand.
Itís going to be hard to replace CB Marcus Peters, an interception machine and one of the NFLís best cover men. Kansas City appears to be weak up front, and it isnít exactly brimming with talent in the secondary aside from Berry. The Chiefs had 31 sacks last season, tied for 24th in the league. They also ranked 29th in the league against the pass, giving up 7.2 yards per attempt.
This would appear to be a unit in decline, although itís possible that Sutton can help keep the Kansas City defense a viable fantasy option.
