Strong Points: Instinctive -- quick to find the ball. Sure tackler. Good hand use to take on and shed blocks. Strong at the point -- holds up vs. bigger linemen. Four-year starter. Aware in coverage.
Weak Points: Very big but not quick-twitch guy. Average range. Limited pass-rush experience. Can he play man coverage in today's NFL? Lacks speed to run down plays in pursuit.
The Way We See It: What is Smith's true weight? He is listed by USC as being 250 pounds but showed up at the Senior Bowl weighing 230. Smith possesses some coverage ability but lacks the play speed and range clubs now covet at the position. At his lower weight, how Smith runs and changes direction in Indy will be very important for his final evaluation. It wasn't too long ago that everyone was looking for players like Smith at linebacker, but that is no longer the case. If he tests well, my grade is too low.
