Strong Points: Mature kid who spent two years in the Pittsburgh Pirates organization. Good size. Very good athlete for a tight end. Runs extremely well, can change direction and has excellent body control. Physical player who likes to block. Good route runner with strong hands; makes the tough catch. Very strong runner with a burst after the catch. Team co-captain as sophomore and junior.
Weak Points: Will be a 25-year-old rookie. Probably as big as he is going to get. His route tree was limited in the South Carolina offense. Needs to develop blocking technique and hand use.
The Way We See It: A fun guy to watch on tape. Hurst was drafted by the Pittsburgh Pirates while in high school. After two years in their organization, he decided to go to college and play football. Played as a backup as a freshman and started the past two seasons. He is very fast and athletic. Gets open against man or zone coverage, catches the ball very well and can make the difficult grab. Very good runner after the catch. Willing as a blocker; needs some technique work but he can get physical. Overall, Hurst can play as a rookie. Should be able to lineup at “F” or “Y.” He already is a mature kid and knows what it takes to be a professional. Second-round talent but may not go that high because of his age.
