Betting on the NFL Draft: One thing you can't do in Las Vegas

Posted April 24, 2008 @ midnight
Yesterday, one of the younger editors remarked that his friends were going to be in Las Vegas for the NFL Draft. My first impression was, the draft is in New York, and you cannot bet on the draft in Las Vegas as is. But my second thought was, how brilliant. The  NBA and NHL playoffs are in full swing, as is early-season baseball, but I would doubt the sports book will be too crowded. (It ...

Don't underestimate the impact of the Jared Allen trade on the NFC playoff picture...

Posted April 25, 2008 @ midnight
To me, the two most significant moves of the offseason to date have been the Patriots' re-signing of WR Randy Moss and the Vikings' trade for Chiefs DE Jared Allen. The Moss re-signing means the Patriots' offense again has the ability to be special. If they don't win the AFC East by daylight, it would be a major upset. The Allen trade isn't quite on the level of Moss' return; Moss is a ...

On the subject of casino markers, Charles Barkley and Super Bowl XLII...

Posted May 15, 2008 @ midnight
I only vaguely know of casino markers; like most people, I'm guessing, I don't wager all that much when I make it to Las Vegas, and I am not going to bet what I do not have easily on hand. So I read with interest the story of Charles Barkley, who now says he will be repaying $400,000 that Wynn Las Vegas says it loaned him in October. "I'm not broke ...

The Casino Marker Files, Vol. 2: Pacman Jones

Posted May 23, 2008 @ midnight
Saw this on profootballltalk this morning: The Las Vegas Sun reports today that the district attorney in Clark County, Nevada, is considering filing charges against Pacman Jones for failing to repay $20,000 in casino markers taken out at Caesars Palace last September. Jones' Las Vegas attorney, Robert Langford, had this to say about the debt, according to the newspaper: "When it comes to casino markers, $20,000 is next to nothing,” he said. “I ...

Update: Pacman has paid his debt to Caesars...

Posted May 23, 2008 @ midnight
Per the Dallas Morning News, Pacman Jones has sent a $20,000 check to pay off the markers he took out at Caesars last September. All told, Jones owes $24,675, including fees to be paid to the Clark County district attorney's office. Recall that Charles Barkley also had some fees attached to the collection of his $400K in debt.

I'll be in Las Vegas for some R&R the next few days, and when I return, I'll be flush with ... sheets of NFL title odds, player props, etc. If there are any other good stories germane to this blog, I'll share them with the class when I return. I'm going to try and swing by some of my favorite sports books (Venetian, Mirage, Caesars) and try to envision how they ...

NFL title odds talk: Smart shopping key

Posted June 06, 2008 @ midnight
Shop around. That is sound advice for those who want to bet on their favorite NFL team to win the title in Las Vegas. The odds do not move in lockstep on futures wagers, and you might find a better price by simply walking across the street. Here are pro football title odds recently posted at the MGM Mirage and Harrah's properties along with the differences in those odds. Certainly some of these may ...

Early (very, very early) Week One lines...

Posted June 10, 2008 @ midnight
NFL handicappers, you can start your September homework. Lines for all 16 games have already been sent out by Las Vegas Sports Consultants, the oddsmaking service that advises the majority of Nevada casinos. Lines for six Week One games are already up at the Las Vegas Hilton.  Without further ado, the Week One pointspreads and totals, as listed on VegasInsider.com. I've added the Hilton numbers where applicable. You'll notice the Patriots, not ...

Passing on the Bills...

In recent weeks, I've begun to take a closer look at the picks I've made as PFW's handicapping columnist in the last three seasons. I've gotten through most of the data, and I expect to be finished with my analysis before the season. When I finish, I'll be happy to share what I've found. The purpose of this exercise is two-fold: I'd like to have a better idea ...

Sundays, with less at stake...

Robert Walker, the race and sports book director for the MGM Mirage casinos, completed his last day on the job on Sunday. Jay Rood, who ran the race and sports book at Mandalay Bay after previously managing the book at the Mirage, takes over for Walker. Walker, who's moving back to his home state of Washington, was always accessible and willing to chat for a few minutes on a variety of handicapping features I ...

With Favre considering a return, it's time for handicappers to start preparing...

Brett Favre is considering coming out of retirement, ESPN reported Wednesday. Whether he goes through with this or whether he plays somewhere other than Green Bay remains to be seen. Would the Packers put Aaron Rodgers (you're either with him or against him!) back on the bench for another season? Probably, considering the Packers were talented enough to be big favorites in the NFC title game just five months ago. But what if the ...
