Might the Eagles have traded McNabb for … Tim Tebow?

Posted April 05, 2010 @ 11:37 a.m.
The Eagles now are the most well-stocked team in the draft following the Donovan McNabb deal, instant power brokers come April 22. They have 11 picks overall, including two picks each in Round Two, Three and Four. They can deal up, deal down, deal into year year, out of next year. As Andy Reid told me last night, they remain flexible and open to anything that comes their way. "Every year I say this, but ...

Dark times for Steelers fans

Posted April 19, 2010 @ 5:48 p.m.
It's an exciting time around the NFL. The schedule is being announced Tuesday. The draft, spread out over three days now, starts Thursday. Hype and more hype. In fact, though, this really is a meaty week. We'll find out more about teams than we will from tomorrow to Saturday than we might in the first week of training camp. Yeah, hopes are high. In most places, anyway. While I was gone on vacation ...

Jets must be careful not to play fast and loose

Posted April 20, 2010 @ 11:44 p.m.
The Jets are the chic team right now. They led at halftime of the AFC title game. They have a young franchise quarterback, a rock-star coach, a terrific defense and they've had a big, big offseason. LaDainian Tomlinson. Santonio Holmes. Antonio Cromartie. And now Jason Taylor, who signed Tuesday night. Too much too fast? Not for Jets fans, who appear to be ready to hoist the Lombardi (or at least a cheap replica of ...

Might Eagles, Broncos and Bills be jockeying for Tebow in Round Two?

Posted April 21, 2010 @ 11:41 a.m.
As the Lester Bangs character says in Almost Famous: "Here's a theory for you to disregard … completely …" Tim Tebow could go in Round One. We've been hearing this for a few weeks now. But I have a feeling he'll be in play in the first 10 picks in Round Two. So who might be interested? I think the Eagles, Bills and Broncos make a lot of sense. And look where they are ...

Ravens sitting in catbird's seat, as always

Posted April 21, 2010 @ 12:44 p.m.
Why does it always seem like the teams picking at the end of Round One always do very well for themselves every year? "Because that's where the value of the draft is," one evaluator told me. "That's how it has been the last few years, and I think that's how it is after the top 3-4 picks this year. Once you get past those, there's not much dropoff (to the bottom ...

Floyd Mayweather: Who is he picking in the draft?

Posted April 21, 2010 @ 4:06 p.m.
As many of you no doubt know, the theme of the Floyd Mayweather-Shane Mosely fight on May 1 is "Who R U Picking?" So I thought it was only appropriate that I asked Mayweather, a friend of the PFW program and an avid football fan, who he would pick in the draft. Although is in lockdown now, training for his huge fight (as seen in the picture), I sent him an email with some draft-related ...

Assessing the damage done to the Steelers with Ben’s suspension

Posted April 21, 2010 @ 6:20 p.m.
The NFL has suspended Ben Roethlisberger six games. It could end up four games. It could end up eight. But for the purposes of this blog entry, let’s call it six. And let’s look at what they face during his league-imposed time of reflection. (In kindergarten, we called this period “time out.”)The Steelers open with a very good Falcons team on the rise and — ahem — their poster-boy QB, Matt Ryan. That game ...

Latest Ben trade chatter

Posted April 22, 2010 @ 11:10 a.m.
It appears that the tables have turned and that the Steelers just might be willing to dangle, if not trade, Ben Roethlisberger. It's entirely possible nothing happens today — one informed person told me this morning it's "50-50 at best" — and that a year from now we are talking about how Ben has turned his life around since he was almost traded. But something could happen. The Steelers could just wipe the slate clean ...

Breaking down Nolan's final mock draft

Posted April 22, 2010 @ 12:24 p.m.
Nolan Nawrocki, PFW's draft sensai (I am tired of guru, expert and so on), has posted his final mock draft. Read up, kids. It's routinely the most accurate you'll find anywhere. What you'll notice is the amount of potential trade activity there could be. No mock on the planet can account for all that is bound to go on. Guarantee we'll see a shocker or two. I thought I would ...

Smilin' Sam is a Ram

Posted April 22, 2010 @ 7:36 p.m.
There really was drama before the first pick. Yeah, we all suspected that the Rams would take Sam Bradford first, but late talk that the Browns were ready to pull a Ditka and send almost their whole draft (plus some sweetenter next year, if you believe the report) made this a potential late shift. No dice. The Rams stayed true and made their unanimous choice. If they were staying there, which they did, this was ...

Browns settle on Haden

Posted April 22, 2010 @ 8:29 p.m.
It sounded like the Browns really wanted Sam Bradford. But knowing that it would require giving up a king's ransom to get him, they stayed put and got a very good football player. Joe Haden is physical, confident and talented. Sure, he ran a pair of slow 40-yard dashes, but he followed those up with much better times at his Pro Day. And yeah, he was in a very talented Florida secondary, but he ...

Sorry, Giants fans, McClain is a Raider

Posted April 22, 2010 @ 8:34 p.m.
I heard from one Giants fan who thought his team could trade back and still get Rolando McClain. Nothing doing. The Raiders pulled a mini-stunner, the first of many I expect this weekend. Not that McClain isn't a super football player. It just threw me off a little, that's all. Perhaps I thought they would take a height-weight-speed guy … at another position. McClain is that guy, and he has great tape to boot ...

Alualu, that's who!

Posted April 22, 2010 @ 8:44 p.m.
One of my favorite players from the Senior Bowl was Tyson Alualu. All week he shined, looking like the Energizer Bunny with dreadlocks. He is an interior rusher, but he can line up at end, as he did at Cal. Jaguars fans probably will love this guy, even if he's not a 10-sack guy. Alualu's energy will rub off on every other defender and open things up for everyone else around him. Is ...

Tebow + Broncos = as perfect a match as you can imagine

Posted April 22, 2010 @ 10:15 p.m.
How can you not like the fit of Tim Tebow and the Broncos? it might not work out. He might never be a great quarterback. But is there a more ideal situation for him? He has a coach who believes in him. This is most important. If we got into Round Two and teams were getting cold feet about picking Tebow, maybe he goes somewhere where it's not a match made in Heaven (pardon ...

Chris Johnson says he would smoke Ginn, but what about Bolt?

Posted Dec. 16, 2009 @ 12:50 p.m.
When I asked Titans GM Mike Reinfeldt about Chris Johnson a few weeks ago, he admitted that he knew Johnson was fast when they drafted him, but that even he was shocked at just how fast he was. Although I missed the teleconference with Johnson today, he reportedly was asked who would win a race between himself and Ted Ginn Jr. Johnson's response: "Not even a legitimate question." OK, big shooter, then how about ...
