Statement from Patriots head coach Bill Belichick on the videotaping incident

Posted Sept. 12, 2007 @ midnight
Sounds kind of guilty to me: “Earlier this week, I spoke with Commissioner Goodell about a videotaping procedure during last Sunday’s game and my interpretation of the rules. At this point, we have not been notified of the league’s ruling. Although it remains a league matter, I want to apologize to everyone who has been affected, most of all ownership, staff and players. Following the league’s decision, I will have further comment.”

Leave a message for Kevin Everett

Posted Sept. 12, 2007 @ midnight
The good news came down yesterday that there is a good likelihood that Bills TE Kevin Everett will walk again, something all of us are very encouraged by. Still, his family has been devastated by the news, and the Bills have set up a webpage where you can leave your name and a message to Kevin and his family, wishing him well. If you get a chance, please do so. I just did.

Thanks for the words for Kevin Everett -- keep it up!

Posted Sept. 13, 2007 @ midnight
Thanks to all who have sent their wishes to Kevin Everett and his family -- both here and on the Bills' website. It's a great tribute to the spirit around the NFL, and it starts with you, the fans. I'll be sure to pass along your comments to the Bills, also. Later, I'll be sure to chime in on Videotapegate and another Patriots observation on one of their star players that might make ...

Tidbits preceding a big weekend of football and travel

Posted Aug. 23, 2007 @ midnight
Friend of PFW's Scott Fowler tells us that Charlotte-area folks who buy TVs from Queen City Audio will get them for free — if the Panthers win the Super Bowl. There are a few catches, so please read the details. Incidentally, I’ll be at Patriots-Panthers tomorrow in Charlotte and will report here from the game. Among the storylines:
  1. Dan Morgan’s return to the field. For the first time in about a year, Morgan ...

Can we all calm down a little on Brady Quinn for now?

Posted Aug. 21, 2007 @ midnight
I am watching the replay of the Browns-Lions game from Saturday night, paying particular attention to a certain No. 1 pick playing quarterback. So far, I am unimpressed. Sure, Quinn looked good. Against the Lions. Against the Lions' fourth-stringers. Against the Lions' fourth-stringers in a prevent defense. Tell me again what that game proved. I'll save you the trouble. It proved that there is genuine excitement around this kid, and he certainly has the ...

The Warren Report: D-linemen's fates heading in different directions

Posted Aug. 17, 2007 @ midnight
The news came across last night that Patriots DE Ty Warren had signed a contract extension, and it appears to be a great move for New England. It was Warren, not Richard Seymour, who graded out as the team's best D-lineman. Yes, Seymour received more blocking attention in the form of double-teams, but Warren's great base strength, excellent motor and improved pass rush make him a top-20 D-lineman in the NFL today. And ...

Preseason zeal is nice for some, but others cry foul

Posted Aug. 19, 2007 @ midnight
So I just finished watching the replay of the Steelers' 12-10 win over the Redskins from Saturday night, and it was nice to see some spirited action, which included a frenzied Mark Brunell leading his team into position to win the game, only to see procedure penalties, game mismanagement and poor execution fell the Redskins. OK, maybe I buried the lede (yes, it's "lede" in journalism terms) a bit, but I was more struck ...

Van Halen hates brown M&Ms, Jen Lopez wants an all-white dressing room ... and the Steelers get filet

Posted Aug. 16, 2007 @ midnight
Yes, yes, I have heard from you folks who are sick of me writing about the Steelers, but I have to do it once more. And then my self-imposed Steelers hiatus will last until next Sunday, when I am in Pittsburgh for Eagles-Steelers ... Til then: Check out the Steelers' hotel rider when they go on the road, which includes filet mignon for everyone, including the equipment guys (nice!) in styrofoam boxes, and only Heinz ketchup ...

Where is Manny Wright? He's with the Giants

Posted Aug. 15, 2007 @ midnight
Remember Manuel "Manny" Wright, the supplemental draft pick from USC who Nick Saban made cry? Well, he's back in the NFL with the Giants. Here's a quick blurb from head coach Tom Coughlin from today:
Q: Manny Wright is the most recognizable of the three names. What did you like about him and what made you bring him in? TC: Well, to be honest with you, pro personnel has been kind of tracking ...

Bulluck's comments add spice to Patriots-Titans on Friday

Posted Aug. 15, 2007 @ midnight
In case you haven't read Keith Bulluck's comments on the Patriots, here they are in a nutshell: He didn't like the way the Patriots, especially WR Reche Caldwell, celebrated following their Week 17 win over the Titans last season, and Bulluck plans to, ahem, be aware of who is in the game and deliver his response in person if a certain receiver happens to cross his path. Here's the exchange between ...

Ike says Steelers not paying attention to expectations

Posted Aug. 14, 2007 @ midnight
Speaking of the Steelers, I just got off the phone with CB Ike Taylor a few hours ago. He told me that he and his teammates have intentionally avoided reading what the media is saying about the Steelers' chances. "We know what we expect of ourselves," Taylor said, "and we know that the other teams we play are quite aware of us. That's all we care about." Taylor also said that Mike Tomlin, the ...

Steelers mascot ruffles feathers

Posted Aug. 13, 2007 @ midnight
I turn the blog over to Harvey "Mr. Steeler" Aronson, whom we profiled in an earlier entry: "Many fans are opposed to "Steely McBeam." So much so that I wrote a petition requesting Dan Rooney to not use the mascot. I had posted a form on my web site (www.steelershotline.com) for other fans to add their names and comments and the response was so overwhelming in favor of getting rid of the mascot ...

Catching up on some draft stuff with two personnel guys

Posted Feb. 13, 2007 @ midnight
So the draft is a mere 10 weeks away … In football time, that’s a shade longer than a New York minute. I remember doing an ESPN.com chat back in November where about a third of the questions were draft-related. Poor Raiders and Lions fans – it’s such a long wait, isn’t it? I was buried in by snow today, so I worked from home and made a couple calls to people around ...

Special-teams stars stay with current NFC East teams

Posted Feb. 27, 2007 @ midnight
Two NFC East teams have re-upped with a couple of their key special-teamers. The Gians re-signed LS Ryan Kuehl, and the Eagles retained S Quintin Mikell, keeping both men off the market before free agenct kicks off Friday morning.Kuehl joined the Giants in 2003 but missed the entire season with an elbow injury. Since then, Kuehl has handled every snap for punts, extra points and field goals and has also contributed 10 special teams ...

Plummer, Pashos and running free-agent notes

Posted March 02, 2007 @ midnight
So it looks as if Jake Plummer will retire instead of reporting to Tampa Bay. The Bucs had acquired Plummer's services for a middle-round pick, believed to be a fourth-rounder, but the trade will be rescinded following Plummer's expected retirement. I like Plummer and think he has gotten a bad rap for the most part, but in one respect I am glad he's done: Late in my fantasy draft, when I am ...
