Cincinnati QB Tony Pike looked sharp, completing 5-of-7 passes for 45 yards. He was focusing on getting the ball to his college teammate, WR Mardy Gilyard, the only player to make more than one catch in the first quarter. Gilyard had two receptions for 21 yards.
The South, operating out of a no-huddle offense, fought back on the next possession. Alabama's Leigh Tiffin connected on a 43-yard field goal of his own. Tim Tebow completed 3-of-6 passes for 23 yards in the first quarter.
