Saints FS Darren Sharper had two more interceptions Sunday, giving him five on the season. Sure, at this rate, he'll pass Dick "Night Train" Lane's mark for 14 in a season, which has held up since 1952.
But that's not the mark we're talking about.
On those five interceptions, Sharper has 275 return yards — think about that for a moment — and two TD returns to go along with it.
The record in a season, not surprisingly at all, is held by the Ravens' Ed Reed, who had 358 return yards on his nine interceptions in that amazing 2004 season.
Interestingly, the 275 is not a personal best for Sharper. Not yet, anyway. He had 276
Reed, one of the best INT returners in history, has 1,161 return yards on picks. Sharper has 1,311 return yards, though he has played five more years than Reed.
Should be be talking about Sharper as a Hall of Famer when it's all said and done? I think we're going to have to. In his 13th season, he's still playing at a high level and should have a few decent seasons remaining. For his excellent career, Sharper has 58 interceptions and 10 pick-sixes (only Rod Woodson has more ever at 12). Sharper this season also joins Deion Sanders as the only other player who has two 90-plus-yard INT returns for touchdowns.
What a nice career. And a Super Bowl ring could make that Hall case a little better.
