The Blue Bombers seem to be doing their best impression of the Bengals.
Adam "Pacman" Jones, who yesterday agreed in principle to a deal with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers of the Canadian Football League, will have another former first-round NFL pick with whom to commiserate: WR Charles Rogers.
According to David Naylor of the Toronto-based paper The Globe and Mail, the Bombers have agreed to terms with the former Lions wideout, who was the second-overall pick in the 2003 NFL draft. Both Jones and Rogers have had some well-documented run-ins with the law in recent years.
Rogers was a highly regarded talent out of Michigan State, but substance-abuse issues and a broken collarbone derailed his short-lived NFL career — he caught just 36 passes for 440 yards and four touchdowns over a three-year span in which he appeared in only 15 games.
Rogers continued to have off-field issues after his release from the Lions, but in a recent interview with ESPN's Outside the Lines, the 28-year-old says his days of "Lamborghini living" are behind him and he is ready to take another shot in the NFL.
I hope for his sake — and for the sake of his seven children — he can beat his self-admitted addiction and play football to the level at which he is capable. Time to put that 4.3 speed to good use.
