The Patriots are regarded as one of the smoothest operating teams on Draft Day and the proof is in the pudding — rings and playoff appearances. Belichick and Co. are like a hitter you just can't fool at the plate — they're prepared for every curveball and when they get the fastball, they don't miss. As it stands, they'll have eight swings in Rounds Two and Three (four selections in each round) after dealing their first-round choice (No. 26) to the Packers (who selected USC OLB Clay Matthews). Whether they use all their 2009 picks or not, the Pats have placed themselves in a position of power, once again proving they understand value. The reality is there is not a drastic value differential between the 26th player and the 58th player (their final second-round choice). By feasting on second-round players, the Pats are able to add good football players at reduced costs. Or, they can maneuver with an eye toward the 2010 draft, expected to be significantly deeper. Bottom line: the Patriots are a force to be reckoned with as presently constituted, will improve their depth through this year's draft and could be major players next April, too.
