What in the world has gotten into Packers GM Ted Thompson? Not only did Thompson's first-round Saturday selections -- NT B.J. Raji in the ninth spot overall and OLB Clay Matthews in the 26th spot -- fill major team needs while not necessarily qualifying as the best athletes available at the time. The Packer GM actually traded UP for Matthews. Heading into this year's draft, Thompson had made 14 draft-day trades with all but one of them being downward.
In order to obtain Matthews, he had to sacrifice Green Bay's second-round pick and two third-round picks in the draft to the Patriots, who along with the Browns went out of their way to adhere to Trader Ted's normal credo on the first day of the draft. Will the move be worth the Packers' while? The answer would appear to be a resounding yes, with Matthews looking like a perfect fit for the Pack's wide-open starting right outside linebacker spot opposite Aaron Kampman.
In Raji and Matthews, the Packers plucked two quality starters for their new-look defense in uncharacteristic fashion. Don't be surprised if Thompson pulls a few more rabbits out of his hat on Sunday.
