As I detailed over in the handicapping blog, the Las Vegas Hilton has a prop bet on the total number of players who will throw a pass in Super Bowl XLIII. The over-under set by the Hilton: 2½ players, and bettors are gravitating to the over.
There's two primary ways for the over to win: either a backup QB attempts a pass, or another position player or specialist throws a pass off a trick play. Most of us would likely prefer the latter to occur. If Arizona's Matt Leinart or Pittsburgh's Byron Leftwich is playing on Sunday, it will likely mean one of the following: 1) the game's a blowout; 2) either Kurt Warner or Ben Roethlisberger has played so horribly that there's no choice but to pull him; 3) an injury has occurred.
Gimmick plays, yea; backup quarterbacks, nay.
Onto my point. The Cardinals have had five players attempt passes this season: Warner, Leinart, WR Jerheme Urban (1-for-1 passing, 18 yards), ex-P Dirk Johnson (1-for-1, 10 yards) and RB J.J. Arrington (0-for-1). Meanwhile, the Steelers have yet to have a non-QB attempt a pass this year.
I've heard some suggest the Cardinals will likely have some sort of trick play to spring on Pittsburgh on Sunday. But what about the Steelers? There's no game film of any non-Pittsburgh QB throwing a pass in a regular-season game since P Daniel Sepulveda (currently on IR) connected for 32 yards with Najeh Davenport (no longer with the club) back on Dec. 20, 2007 at St. Louis.
Who knows? Maybe the Steelers have been waiting for the right moment to get really, really creative.
