Quit right now. That seems to be what the Pro Football Hall of Fame is telling Steelers defensive coordinator Dick LeBeau if he wants to be enshrined in the Hall before he turns 80. LeBeau, football’s coordinator emeritus and architect of the zone blitz, who at 71 doesn’t look a shade over 55, is not among the 17 finalists for induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame and won’t be as long as he’s coaching in some capacity.Coaches, like players, must wait five years after retirement to be considered for enshrinement in Canton. Understandably, the rule is in place so players aren’t judged on a few prosperous years. But isn’t LeBeau’s 35-year coaching career enough to go on? The rule could still exist, but in conjunction with a milestone of say, 20 years, that would allow those coaches to be eligible.
