Chiefs' silence casts doubt about Croyle's future
Sept. 27, 2008
The Chiefs have not denied reports that they called the Browns this week to check on the availability of QB Brady Quinn, indicating that those rumors are likely true. The fact that the Chiefs are considering acquiring another young quarterback shows that they lack confidence in Brodie Croyle, who has struggled with injuries and poor play, to be their QB of the future.
Word out of Oakland is that Justin Fargas will regain his spot as the team’s starting running back when he recovers from a groin injury that is expected to keep him out for a second consecutive week. The Raiders have two other talented youngsters in the backfield, Darren McFadden and Michael Bush, but Fargas did nothing to play himself out of that No. 1 role.
We hear that Chargers ILB Matt Wilhelm admitted he got complacent early this season, leading to subpar efforts in the first two games. His play has since picked up, but he may not be able to hold off the charge of surging LB Tim Dobbins. Dobbins has been a pleasant surprise for a San Diego defense that’s missing LB Shawne Merriman and could find himself in the starting lineup before long.
Broncos C Tom Nalen’s career is in doubt now that he’s been placed on injured reserve. The 15th-year veteran, who will become a free agent this winter, has been plagued by knee pain and hasn’t played in a game since Week Five of last season, but sources in Denver would not rule out his return to the team next season. Head coach Mike Shanahan is extremely loyal, particularly to a player like Nalen, who has spent his entire career with the Broncos, and Shanahan could give him another shot, if he’s interested in continuing his career.
