The Colts are in no rush to plug Tony Ugoh back into the starting OLT job. Although he’s still the best option they have when he’s healthy, his spotty play this season has the coaches content to allow him to heal 100 percent from his groin injury before inserting him back in the lineup ahead of OT-OG hybrid Charlie Johnson.
We hear that OG Chris Naeole, who was signed Sept. 17 after a rash of injuries to the Jaguars’ interior offensive line, is closer to returning to the field than C Brad Meester (biceps). Naeole tore his anterior cruciate ligament in midseason of 2007 and is almost back to full strength. Meester, the O-line’s anchor, still could be out several more weeks.
The Justin Forsett experiment didn’t work. The Colts signed the explosive rookie from California in an attempt to add more pop to their humdrum return game, but it didn’t work out. After the Colts waived him, CB Keiwan Ratliff (punts) and WR Pierre Garcon (kickoffs) are expected to handle the return duties.
The Titans are not going to take any chances if P Craig Hentrich’s back pain flares up during the season, so don’t be surprised if they have to call again on veteran Josh Miller, who filled in for Hentrich once last season under similar circumstances and was added to the roster in Week Five in the event Hentrich could not go.
Colts CB Kelvin Hayden was somewhat critical of the field condition at Houston’s Reliant Stadium and attributed the left knee injury he suffered in Week Five to stepping into one of the divisions between the eight-foot-square trays of natural grass that make up the playing surface. The way we hear it, any past complaints about the field condition at Reliant have not been widespread and have generally been related to simple wear and tear from playing games on the surface.
