Patriots QB Kevin O'Connell
|
There’s a growing faction in Foxborough that believes rookie QB Kevin O’Connell should be considered for the starting job if Matt Cassel continues to struggle. Having started four years at San Diego State, O’Connell’s playing experience actually trumps Cassel’s, and his teammates have perhaps more trust in him than they do in Cassel, a fourth-year Patriot. As one team source told us, “You know (the players) aren’t crazy about Matt when the best they say about him is that he’s ‘enthusiastic.’ No team wants a glorified cheerleader running their offense.”
Bills OLT Jason Peters hasn’t been looking like his Pro Bowl self. Word from Buffalo is that his extended holdout has clearly left him playing catch-up, and it shows on Sundays. Still, there’s no chance of him being benched.
If rookie CB Leodis McKelvin is forced into extensive playing time with the knee injury to Terrence McGee, expect the Bills to employ more deep-zone coverages. As much promise as they see in McKelvin, they’re reluctant to leave him on an island.
We hear the Dolphins have been disappointed in OLB Charlie Anderson after the free-agent pickup’s impressive showing in training camp. That’s counterbalanced, however, by the tremendous play of fellow OLB Joey Porter, who may be playing better than at any point in his decorated career.
