Upside: Rare size-speed ratio. Can flat-out fly. Shows nice acceleration and will jump underneath routes. Is attached to receivers at the hip on crossers and drags. Versatile — has starting experience at both free safety and cornerback. Very good open-field tackler also does a nice job fighting through receivers’ blocks and attacking the line of scrimmage. Has the size, strength and range to be effective off the hash.
Downside: Has a high, unnatural backpedal and shuffles his feet awkwardly. Can be slow to sink his hips, plant and drive on the ball. Plays tall and off balance. Gets beaten too easily at the line in press coverage. Lacks great functional strength. Will open up too early off the line and let receivers release inside. Struggles to flip his hips and takes false steps to regain his balance. Does not show great recovery speed and can get beaten deep. Not a natural ballhawk.
The way we see it: Very physically impressive specimen who will test off the charts. Godfrey is tight and flawed technically, still raw in press coverage and surprisingly lets receivers get behind him. His best pro position might be at free safety if he proves he can handle making adjustments. Many of his flaws are correctable, and he has the sheer physical tools to awe coaches. Versatility is a plus.
