Ex-49ers QB Trent Dilfer said on a conference call Wednesday that a torn Achilles tendon has helped him make up his mind to retire from the NFL.
Dilfer, 36, was slated to play in the American Century Championships in Lake Tahoe, Nev., but was unable to play due to his injury. He told PackerReport.com that he will be announcing his retirement in the next few days.
Before the announcement, Dilfer, a free agent after being let go by the 49ers following the 2007 season, was rumored to be a possible candidate to serve as Aaron Rodgers' backup in Green Bay.
Dilfer, a 14-year veteran, started six games for San Francisco last season and appeared in seven games. He was the sixth overall pick in the 1994 draft by the Buccaneers. His crowning achievement in the league came when he led the Ravens to victory in Super Bowl XXXV. He also played for the Seahawks and Browns.
