Niners QB Smith could be out for year

QB Alex Smith's future with the Niners has become murkier than ever after it was learned before the team's season opener against Arizona that the former first-round draft pick has a fractured bone in his throwing shoulder that could end his season for the second straight year due to injury.
Smith, who had lost the battle for the Niners' starting QB job to J.T. O'Sullivan, felt a sharp pain in his shoulder when he threw his final pass in Friday's practice. An MRI of the shoulder has been sent to Dr. James Andrews, who operated on Smith's separated shoulder in December.
Should Smith go on the I.R. list, the Niners will probably be forced to sign a third quarterback behind O'Sullivan and Shaun Hill. That role was being filled today in the Cardinals game by RB Michael Robinson, a former quarterback at Penn State.
