Niners sign No. 1 pick Balmer

The Niners wiped their 2008 rookie contract slate clean Thursday afternoon with the signing of their first-round draft pick, DL Kentwan Balmer. Terms of Balmer's contract were not immediately available.
A 6-5, 315-pound product of the University of North Carolina, the versatile Balmer earned three starting assignments at right defensive end, eight at left defensive tackle and 12 at right defensive tackle during his collegiate career.
Plans call for Balmer, whose lateral movement is considered one of his major strengths, to continue in a versatile role with the Niners in a defense expected to rotate between the 3-4 and 4-3 schemes with regularity.
