The Niners announced Tuesday afternoon that they had signed their 2008 third-round draft pick, CB Reggie Smith, leaving two '08 Niners rookies unsigned (first-round DT Kentwan Balmer and fourth-round C Cody Wallace). Terms of Smith's deal were not disclosed.
The 6-1, 200-pound Smith saw action in 39 games with 36 starts at the University of Oklahoma, splitting his time almost evenly between strong safety (20 starts) and cornerback (16 starts). A first-team All-Big 12 selection as a senior, Smith is expected to compete for the starting CB post currently held down by veteran Walt Harris.
The Niners are looking for a more physical presence opposite Nate Clements who can disrupt receivers at the line of scrimmage, and they have reason to believe Smith can fill that role, provided he can show enough quickness.
