Cardinals' offense in a real zone
By Dan Arkush
Sept. 15, 2008
With every passing game, the Cardinals’ high-powered offensive attack seems to be either establishing or spearheading another milestone. With veteran QB Kurt Warner looking better than ever, the Cardinals completely dominated an overmatched Miami team in Week Two, easily winning 31-10 to move their record to 2-0 to start the season for the first time in 17 years. Warner, who has thrown for more TDs since the midpoint of last season than any other NFL quarterback (25, five more than his closest pursuers Tom Brady and Drew Brees), had a perfect 158.3 passer rating against the Dolphins, completing his first nine passes for 221 yards and finishing the afternoon with 19-of-24 completions for 361 yards and three TDs.
Warner's first pass was a 79-yard TD to WR Anquan Boldin, who ended the day with a career-high three scores. Boldin and fellow WR Larry Fitzgerald had a combined 12 catches for 293 yards and Boldin’s three TDs.
The team’s 10th consecutive game with 20-plus points extends the longest such streak in the NFL, with six 30-point games thrown into the potent mix. The 54 points they have scored in their first two games is the most in that span since they scored 68 in the first two games of the 1985 season.
The PFW spin
A lot of things are working well right now for head coach Ken Whisenhunt’s lively attack. Warner’s passes have been deadly accurate, but most importantly, he is avoiding turnovers, which has been a longtime Achilles heel for him. Through two games, the Cardinals’ offensive execution has been sharp and precise with nary a turnover, and if that keeps up, they could be very hard to stop.
Beyond that, Boldin, who has said he wants to be traded due to contract concerns, is channeling the anger over his salary situation the right way, by playing his butt off with a real chip on his shoulder. It almost appears as if he’s trying to outdo Fitzgerald, who is making a lot more money than him at the moment, and Fitzgerald is responding by matching Boldin with one great catch after another.
In the meantime, Arizona’s ground game is providing more than enough balance. Veteran Edgerrin James just keeps on trucking, and the running attack has been bolstered by rookie RB Tim Hightower, who is the first player in Cardinals history with rushing TDs in each of his first two pro games.
Our fantasy take
If you’ve got the luxury of having Warner, Fitzgerald and/or Boldin on your fantasy roster, the suggestion is to just sit back and savor your good fortune, even though the trio goes up against a Redskins defense on the road next Sunday that did a very creditable job against the Saints’ offense in Week Two, allowing only 250 yards. Hightower, meanwhile, has become an intriguing “flex” option who might be developing into a consistent TD weapon near the goal line.
