The defending NFC South champs face a tough opening test in Week One. Many observers considered the Saints one of the most improved teams in the NFC and their offensive firepower, bolstered by the addition of TE Jeremy Shockey, will be a challenge for Tampa Bay’s stout defense, which ranked first against the pass last season.
Buccaneers offense vs. Saints defense: The Bucs’ offense is built on efficiency and ball control. There aren’t many explosive playmakers, but QB Jeff Garcia proved last season that he doesn’t need those to keep the team competitive. Garcia will look to hit WR Joey Galloway deep against a vulnerable New Orleans secondary. Galloway has a staggering 28 catches for 614 yards and eight touchdowns in his last six games against the Saints. On the ground, Bucs RBs Earnest Graham and Warrick Dunn should see most of the workload. Graham came up big for Tampa last season after Cadillac Williams was injured. He’s known for his ability to barrel past defenders using his bulky frame as a rusher, but he’s a very effective receiver out of the backfield, as well.
Saints offense vs. Buccaneers defense: New Orleans is expected to make what already was a top offense even more explosive in 2008. Drew Brees could be in line for a career year with a new weapon, Shockey, to utilize as well as a talented returning supporting cast, including WR Marques Colston and RB Reggie Bush. Brees, however, struggled early last season and he could be in for a bumpy debut once again. Tampa Bay’s secondary — led by CB Ronde Barber — is one of the league’s best. Bucs DEs Gaines Adams and Greg White could be disruptive if they can beat OTs Jammal Brown and Jon Stinchcomb in the pass rush.
Special teams: Bucs PK Matt Bryant, who has built a solid reputation over the past few seasons, hit a slump in the preseason, going just 7-for-12 on FG attempts. Head coach Jon Gruden might keep Bryant on a short leash in Week One and if his cold streak continues, it could be the difference in the game.
