Michael Vick has filed for bankruptcy protection from his cell at the U.S. Penitentiary in Leavenworth, Kan., where he is serving a 23-month sentence on federal dogfighting charges.
Vick filed Chapter 11 documents in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Newport News, Va., on Monday. The seven biggest creditors listed in the documents are owed nearly $12.8 million. Vick says he owes creditors somewhere between $10 million and $50 million.
Upon pleading guilty to federal dogfighting charges last year, Vick was suspended indefinitely without pay by the NFL and lost all of his biggest sponsors.
