Trying to give both sides more time to work out a compromise, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell took no action Wednesday on Brett Favre’s formal request to be reinstated. Favre filed the request Tuesday.
Packers president Mark Murphy flew to Mississippi to meet with Favre and his agent, James “Bus” Cook, perhaps hoping to convince Favre not to report to the Packers’ training camp later this week. The Packers have said that Aaron Rodgers is their starting quarterback and that Favre, should he decide to rejoin the team, would be a backup.
Once Goodell approves Favre’s request for reinstatement, the Packers would have 24 hours to either release him or add him to their roster. They have indicated that they would not release Favre, but adding him to the roster might create distractions and some tension if he reported to camp. The Packers’ other option would be to trade Favre, an avenue they have explored.
Favre is under contract to Green Bay through the 2010 season.
