Rodgers is Packers' starter, though Favre welcome to return

By PFW staff
July 12, 2008

Packers GM Ted Thompson, who conducted a series of interviews with Wisconsin media outlets on Saturday, said that Brett Favre could return to Green Bay this season. But the embattled general manager noted that the club has moved on and that Aaron Rodgers is currently the team's starting quarterback, which suggests that Favre would have to return in a backup capacity, something the future Hall of Famer might have trouble swallowing.

Coming out of retirement to serve as the caddy to an unproven Rodgers could potentially dissuade Favre from making a comeback, which might be part of Thompson's strategy, considering he hasn't been warm to Favre's attempt to return.

Thompson later clarified his position in a different interview, during which he said that Favre wouldn't necessarily return as a backup, but as "an active member of the Green Bay Packers" if he were to file the appropriate paperwork with the league allowing his reinstatement.

One thing that appears certain, though, is that the Packers are not about to grant Favre his release, which he requested this week. Whether the team would consider trading Favre is another matter altogether, and one that Thompson was not interested in discussing on Saturday.
