Can it get any stranger?

In the latest twist in the ongoing Brett Favre pot-boiler, both ESPN's Wendi Nix and NFL Network's Adam Schefter reported today that sources have indicated Packers head coach Mike McCarthy now plans on creating an open competition for the starting QB job with Favre back in the picture.

Favre, who will be officially reinstated by commissioner Roger Goodell Monday morning, is expected to be back practicing by Tuesday, presumably when he will start going head-to-head with Aaron Rodgers for the starting job under center.

If these reports are accurate, it would appear Favre is no longer interested in the lifetime $20 million personal-services deal the Packers had offered him.

Another weird wrinkle in the Favre saga comes courtesy of FoxSports.com's Jay Glazer, who reported today that the Packers have hired former White House press secretary Ari Fleischer to help manage the circus atmosphere that is sure to be in full bloom at the Packers' training camp within the next few days.
