According to ESPN's Chris Mortensen, the ball is now officially in Packers GM Ted Thompson's court in the continuing Brett Favre soap opera.
Mortensen reported Friday afternoon that Favre has asked the Packers for his official release from the team. He did so in the form of a letter, which was sent via overnight mail on Thursday, arriving at Packers headquarters on Friday. There was no immediate reaction reported from Thompson and the Packers.
In the ESPN story, it was also reported that Thompson, head coach Mike McCarthy, Favre and agent Bus Cook participated in a conference call on Tuesday, during which Favre made it clear that he wanted to play in 2008. After not getting an enthusiastic response from Thompson and McCarthy, Favre decided to ask for his release.
Mortensen also reported that Favre has been working out diligently down in Mississippi and "looks great." In the last few days, Packers higher-ups who have been asked about Favre have maintained that they thought Favre would remain retired. But that sentiment has run contrary to the growing belief among pro football insiders that Favre is indeed ready to put back on the shoulder pads — whether it's for the Packers or not.
