Lions' Stanton could be out four weeks with thumb injury

Lions QB Drew Stanton bruised and sprained his thumb and is expected to miss the first two games of the season.
His thumb likely will be put into a cast, and the injury is expected to shelve him for four weeks.
Stanton was third on the QB depth chart behind starter Jon Kitna and backup Dan Orlovsky but was improving markedly the past few weeks. In the first two preseason games, Stanton completed 7-of-8 passes for 85 yards and a touchdown and rushed for one TD also.
The Lions are expected to work out quarterbacks this week but whomever they sign might only be a placeholder for the final exhibition game. They are not expected to keep four QBs while Stanton heals.
Stanton, a second-round pick in 2007, suffered a knee injury early in training camp last year and spent his entire rookie season on injured reserve.
