The Bears have reworked MLB Brian Urlacher's contract, ESPN.com reported on Monday. Urlacher received a $6 million signing bonus and a $1 million raise in each of the next four seasons. The Bears also added another year onto the deal at a salary of $7.5 million, meaning Urlacher's pact now runs through the 2012 season.
The new agreement satisfies Urlacher's wish to be paid like one of the game's top defensive players and ends a potential distraction as the Bears prepare to open training camp on Tuesday. Urlacher took his displeasure with his contract public in the offseason, though he did report to the team's mandatory workouts.
Urlacher, 30, is one of the top players at his position in the game. He started all 16 games in 2007, notching 123 tackles, defending 12 passes, intercepting five passes and registering five sacks.
