The long-expected contract extension for Bears RS-WR Devin Hester was agreed to Sunday, with the Bears announcing that they had signed the two-time Pro Bowler for four more years, locking him up with the team through 2013.

Terms of the deal were not announced. Hester is the ninth Bears player to receive a contract extension this offseason.

After sitting out the opening day of training camp to express to the team his unhappiness with his contract situation, Hester reported to camp but did not participate in workouts due to what was announced as a tight hamstring.

Negotiations between Hester's agent, Eugene Parker, and the Bears were difficult because Hester hasn't played enough as a wide receiver to prove he deserves the kind of pay a top wideout earns but he also has more than proven his importance to the team as a special-teams star with 11 career kick returns (punt and kickoff) plus a 108-yard TD return of a missed field goal and a 92-yard kickoff return in Super Bowl XLI.

Now that he is signed, Hester can resume his preparation for an expanded role in the Bears' offense as a wide receiver in addition to his return duties.
