Shortly into the Bears' preseason opener vs. the Chiefs at Soldier Field Thursday evening, the team disclosed that first-round draft pick Chris Williams had undergone surgery earlier in the day for a herniated lumbar disc in his lower spine and is out indefinitely.
The injury, the team said, occurred on the first day of practice and is unrelated to the back problems Williams experienced in college at Vanderbilt. Williams, who was expected to be the team's starting left tackle this season, had been unable to practice since the second day of camp.
Williams' latest back injury reportedly is similar to the one suffered by CB Charles Tillman in 2006. Tillman was able to return to action later that year, and the Bears also expect Williams to be able to make it back. As a result, according to our sources, the Bears are planning to keep Williams on the final 53-man roster.
It was also reported today that the Bears have been in contact with the agent of OT Fred Miller, whom they released after his subpar effort in 2007.
