Redskins cut S Schweigert; Horton impresses

In a little bit of a surprise, the Redskins cut S Stuart Schweigert, who was expected to come in and vie for a starting spot in the secondary.
The Redskins had planned on pitting Schweigert against Reed Doughty in a battle at safety to start alongside LaRon Landry, but Schweigert never seemed comfortable playing in coordinator Greg Blache’s aggressive style of defense.
This likely means that Landry primarily will play free safety, which is where he moved to following the death of Sean Taylor. Doughty is a more natural strong safety, playing closer to the line of scrimmage.
Another reason the team was able to let Schweigert go comfortably was the emergence of seventh-round rookie Chris Horton, who has impressed the coaches with his hustle and athleticism. Horton had an outstanding debut in the Hall of Fame game with two sacks and a recovery of an onside kick. Fellow rookie S Kareem Moore also stands a good chance to make the team, although mainly as a special-teamer right away.
