It’s hard to argue with the batting average with first-round picks. Sean Taylor was a star before his death, Carlos Rogers was coming around before a knee injury, Jason Campbell has developed and LaRon Landry has started since Day One. You can even throw in Rocky McIntosh, taken at the top of Round Two, who played well before getting hurt. But the team has been handicapped by its own bad deals. Horrendous trades for T.J. Duckett, Brandon Lloyd, Mark Brunell and others — engineered by Daniel Snyder, Vinny Cerrato and team president Joe Gibbs (since 2004) — left the team with a bare cupboard of picks. Since ’03, the Redskins have made fewer selections (24) than any team by a long shot; the team with the next-fewest is the Cardinals (33). The track record shows that the team has not valued the draft the way other teams do. And it’s too bad because the team has found nice talent in the third (Derrick Dockery, Chris Cooley) and sixth rounds (Reed Doughty, Kedric Golston and H.B. Blades) when it has had picks to use.
