The Chiefs agreed to terms Monday with two draft picks, RB Jamaal Charles and TE Brad Cottam. Both players received three-year contracts.
Charles, a third-round pick from Texas, is expected to compete with Kolby Smith for the backup job to starter Larry Johnson. His good speed could also be used to return kicks. In three seasons with the Longhorns, Charles had 538 carries for 3,328 yards and 36 touchdowns.
In PFW's 2008 Draft Preview, draft expert Nolan Nawrocki said this of Charles: "Rare speed will attract early interest, but inability to secure the football and run between the tackles could keep him from ever being more than a complementary, change-of-pace back and kick returner. Would fit best alongside a power back."
Cottam, a third-round choice out of Tennessee, will back up Tony Gonzalez but figures to see a lot of playing time when Kansas City uses two-TE sets. Known more as a blocker, Cottam impressed at the Senior Bowl with his solid pass-catching ability.
Nawrocki had this take on Cottam: "Intangibles are strong and has a lot of upside, but a lean build and rare length could make it difficult for him to stay healthy. Still must make considerable gains in the weight room and as a blocker and learn to play with leverage."
The Chiefs now have eight of their 12 draft picks signed. However, first-rounders DT Glenn Dorsey and OL Branden Albert and second-round selection CB Brandon Flowers remain without contracts.
