After working out veteran QBs Byron Leftwich and Daunte Culpepper on Sunday morning, the Steelers chose Leftwich.
The former Falcon and Jaguar will back up starter Ben Roethlisberger after Pittsburgh lost backup QB Charlie Batch to a broken right collarbone. Batch suffered the injury in a win over Philadelphia at Heinz Field on Friday night, and after undergoing surgery Monday, he is expected to be out 4-6 weeks.
Leftwich, who was cut by Atlanta in February, has played in only nine games the past two years because of ankle injuries.
The Steelers also added some punting competition for Paul Ernster, signing 35-year-old Mitch Berger to a one-year contract. The player originally expected to win Pittsburgh’s punting job was 2007 draft pick Daniel Sepulveda, but he tore his anterior cruciate ligament and will be sidelined all season.
In another move, the Steelers activated NT Casey Hampton from the physically-unable-to-perform list.
