Chad Johnson refuted an ESPN report that he has a partially torn labrum that could require surgery, punctuating his claim by doing 20 push-ups in front the assembled media Tuesday morning at Paul Brown Stadium. He furthermore insisted that he would be back in action for the regular-season opener.
“I asked Marvin (Lewis) to play Thursday (the Bengals’ final preseason game), just to not prove a point, but to show that I’m ready to go, and he told me no,” Johnson said.
Johnson sprained his shoulder after landing on it awkwardly in the second preseason game. Regardless of when he comes back, he will wear a protective harness for precautionary measures.
The Bengals are hurting at receiver, with T.J. Houshmandzadeh and rookie Andre Caldwell also banged up. Additionally, Marcus Maxwell was waived after injuring his thigh last week, and recently re-signed Chris Henry is suspended the first four regular-season games for violating the personal conduct policy.
