Bills RB Marshawn Lynch is lauded for the way he knocks people over with his bullish style. His own quarterback, however, isn’t among those his coaches want to see him get physical with. Such was the case Tuesday evening when Lynch collided with QB Trent Edwards during 11-on-11 drills, a collision which left Edwards with a deep quad contusion in his left leg. Edwards left the field with trainers and didn’t return, leaving his status for Sunday’s preseason matchup against the Colts in doubt.
“Right now, I’m just kind of taking it day-to-day because it’s still pretty early on in the process,” Edwards said. “Today is Wednesday and we still have three or four more practices until that actual game day. So I’m hoping that I can get with the trainers and rehab this as quickly as I can and get back and help this team win on Sunday.”
Teams typically give their starters extensive playing time in the third exhibition game, then mostly rest them in the fourth game. If Edwards is unable to go, J.P. Losman assumes the starting job.
Edwards, a second-year player out of Stanford, showed marked improvement from the Bills’ preseason opener to the second game, appearing more comfortable at the controls of new offensive coordinator Turk Schonert’s QB friendly system.
