Fantasy spin: Favre's impact on the Jets

The Brett Favre circus in Green Bay is finally over. Time for the train to move on to New York.
With Favre being traded to the Jets late Wednesday night, the fantasy ramifications are widespread. First, Favre himself should be moved into the top 20 of your QB rankings. He'll have to learn a new system in a condensed amount of time, but he's a smart, seasoned player who should be able to pick up enough to get by early on. Also, he'll be playing behind an upgraded O-line and has a receiving corps that's not at all bad. And it shouldn't take him long to get into game shape, as he has been working out in the offseason.
It sounds funny to say about a 38-year-old, but Favre's upside is tremendous. Just look at what the guy did last season for the Packers: He completed 66.5 percent of his passes for 4,155 yards and 28 TDs, finishing with a 95.7 passer rating. Although those numbers will be difficult to match, he has the potential to finish the season as a top-10 fantasy QB, unlike those near him in the rankings. The downside, however, is that he finally could fizzle out and return to being the interception machine he was in 2005. Drafting him will be a roll of the dice, but there aren't many other fantasy backups with Favre's ceiling.
The arrival of the future Hall of Famer should be music to the ears of the Jets' receivers. Laveranues Coles now looks to be a solid No. 3 fantasy wideout, with teammate Jerricho Cotchery not far behind. The duo probably won't produce as well as Donald Driver and Greg Jennings did in Green Bay last season, but Gang Green's fantasy players certainly look a lot more attractive than they did a week ago. That also includes the tight ends, as both rookie Dustin Keller and Chris Baker have increased value with Favre in town.
The biggest losers in this deal are the guys who were competing for the Jets' starting QB job, Chad Pennington and Kellen Clemens. Pennington likely will be shipped out of New York very soon — possibly landing in Miami, Kansas City or Minnesota — and Clemens is now eliminated from the starting picture and loses all fantasy value. Pennington could regain some fantasy relevance if he gets a shot to start elsewhere.
