This season the Fantasy Doctor will answer a few of our readers' fantasy questions on an almost daily basis, Monday through Friday. Send your questions to the Doc at the address above.
Fantasy Doc:
In need of some serious client counseling. For the upcoming season I can only franchise two players, and my decision is between four RBs: Maurice Jones-Drew, Ronnie Brown, Ryan Grant and Brandon Jacobs. All have question marks … what two should I keep?
— Gary, Valparaiso, Ind.
You definitely have a bit of a dilemma there, Gary, but that's why the Doc is here. First off, the knee injury to Ronnie Brown scares me — plus, he'll be yielding some carries to Ricky Williams — so I'd shy away from keeping him. I like each of your three remaining backs, but I rate Ryan Grant slightly ahead of the other two. Grant emerged last season as a solid workhorse for Green Bay and enters '08 as a true featured back. At just 25 years old, he only figures to get better. With your second keeper, I'd retain Maurice Jones-Drew. Even though he'll continue to split carries with Fred Taylor, M.J.D. has a 5.1 career yards per carry, can catch out of the backfield and scores at an alarming pace (24 TDs from scrimmage in two pro seasons). He'll produce enough even in a timeshare. Brandon Jacobs isn't a bad option, but he got bit by the injury bug last season, his first as a starter, and likely will see his role scaled back in '08.
I'm in a keeper league and scoring is the only way you can earn points. My tight ends are Owen Daniels and Todd Heap? Who do you think will catch the most touchdowns?
— Keith Niemuth, Neenah, Wis.
Keith, if your league only counts TDs and not yardage, you probably have to go with Todd Heap. Before his injury-plagued '07, Heap was one of the top fantasy tight ends, scoring six or more TDs in three of the prior five seasons. Additionally, new Ravens offensive coordinator Cam Cameron, who coached Antonio Gates in San Diego, has stated that he wants to use Heap in a Gates-like fashion, splitting him out wide and stretching the field. Owen Daniels, though certainly an up-and-comer at the TE position, has not yet proven to be a major scoring threat. He remains a nice pick in yardage leagues, however.
