Buccaneers add June
PFW asks associate editor Mike Wilkening for his take on NFL topics of interest.
Buccaneers sign June to three-year deal
The Buccaneers signed Colts unrestricted free-agent WLB Cato June to a three-year contract on Saturday. The Tampa Tribune reports the deal could be worth up to $12 million. The 6-foot, 227-pound June made 142 tackles and intercepted three passes for Super Bowl champion Indianapolis in 2006.
PFW: What will June's role be in Tampa Bay?
Wilkening: June could end up playing a variety of roles. Derrick Brooks is a fixture on the weak side. June could get playing time at middle linebacker, especially if veteran Shelton Quarles retires because of a history of concussions. However, Barrett Ruud seems likely to step into Quarles' starting role in that scenario. June could also get some playing time on the strong side, but he doesn't have ideal size for that position.
In any event, although it's possible that he may not start right away, June is too good to keep off the field for long. The Buccaneers were wise to sign him, especially with Quarles' future up in the air. June is excellent in pass coverage, and his familiarity with the cover-2 will help him adjust quickly to Monte Kiffin's defense.
I am a little surprised that June didn't attract more interest earlier in free agency, but he's landed with a team that will use him correctly. He could well be the heir apparent to Brooks, and he could really cash in with the next contract he signs if all pans out well in Tampa.
