Favre watch: Ball in McCarthy's court

At some point before the Packers’ 3 p.m. ET practice Tuesday, Green Bay head coach Mike McCarthy will unearth the latest nugget in the ongoing Brett Favre saga.
McCarthy met with Favre for more than five hours Monday, and left Packers headquarters close to midnight with nothing to report, and discussions apparently are expected to continue this morning. McCarthy was supposed to meet with reporters at 8:15 p.m. Monday, but the Packers canceled the news conference around 8:45 p.m.
What everybody wants to know is whether or not Favre will be on the field for today’s practice, but according to Jay Glazer of FOXSports.com, the odds of Favre showing up aren’t likely at all.
Glazer reported that Favre strongly indicated in yesterday’s meeting that the last thing he wanted was to be a distraction, and that he thought it was in the team’s best interests to go into the season with Aaron Rodgers as the starting QB.
As for Favre’s other options, Glazer’s report, if accurate, suggests that a trade could be in the offing, perhaps before the day runs out.
The league ruling that cleared the Vikings of tampering charges yesterday also might have cleared a way for a deal with Minnesota, which is Favre’s preferred landing spot.
NFL Network’s Adam Schefter reported Tuesday morning that there were trade talks at one point with the Buccaneers Monday that didn’t go far.
There is also the possibility that the Packers could release Favre, unlikely as it may seem, or that Favre will decide to accept the $20 million to $25 million lifetime marketing services deal the team offered him if he were to stay retired.
And the drama continues.
