Cam Newton and Kelvin Benjamin had a little pregame chat. But this was not your average, how-ya-doin reunion.
It appears that Newton wasn't thrilled with what Benjamin told The Athletic recently about his former quarterback. Among the critical comments the Buffalo Bills receiver had for Newton included putting the QB's accuracy and "knowledge" on full blast.
Before Thursday's preseason game — the only time they're scheduled to play this season unless (LOL) they make the Super Bowl — Newton approached Benjamin during warmups and engaged in a little chit-chat. It appeared moderately friendly for a moment, but Benjamin appeared to want little to do with it and started to walk away.
And that's when the tension seemed to rise just a bit. Well, to preseason levels any way.
Benjamin played for the Panthers for parts of three seasons before they traded him to Buffalo last year when the receiver made it clear he wanted to move on. After a big rookie season in 2014, Benjamin suffered a torn ACL the year the Panthers started out 15-0 and made the Super Bowl.
The game doesn't count for anything, but Benjamin had a fantastic drive on the opening series, catching four passes for 59 yards — including a 28-yard TD. That was the extent of his work on the night, letting his skills do the talking. But Benjamin did celebrate the score by diving into the stands.
Newton completed 6-of-9 passes for 84 yards in a few series of work before sitting the rest of the night out.
