The Dolphins continued their spending spree on Tuesday and surprised many by signing former Ravens LB Dannell Ellerbe on Tuesday, Aaron Wilson of The Baltimore Sun first reported.

In 2012, Ellerbe played in 13 games with seven starts and had 92 tackles, 4½ sacks and two passes defensed. In four playoff games, Ellerbe had 32 tackles, two passes defensed and an interception in the AFC title game.

The Ravens were working hard to keep Ellerbe. They already lost LB Paul Kruger to the Browns and Ray Lewis to retirement.

After signing Ellerbe, the Dolphins released veteran ILB Karlos Dansby, who had been with the team since 2010 and was due a base salary of $6.05 million in 2013. Ellerbe joins a linebacking corps that includes Kevin Burnett and Koa Misi.

The Dolphins opened free agency by signing WR Mike Wallace. Miami also re-signed S Chris Clemons on Tuesday. Clemons started all 16 games last season and had 98 tackles and two interceptions.
