The 49ers released PK David Akers, the team announced Wednesday.
In 2012, Akers missed 13 field goals in the regular season, going 29-for-42. The Niners brought in Billy Cundiff prior to the postseason, but Akers kept the job, making 4-of-5 field-goal attempts, including all three in the Super Bowl loss to the Ravens.
“The 49ers would like to thank David for his service, dedication and leadership over the past two years,” said 49ers General Manager Trent Baalke. “He is a true professional who represented himself and this organization with class. We wish him, and his family, all the best.”
Akers shared the PFW Golden Toe Award in 2011 after making 44-of-52 field-goal attempts. The 38-year-old kicker has a career field-goal percentage of 81.0. He was due a base salary of $3 million for 2013.
