INDIANAPOLIS — As if Jets GM John Idzik doesn’t have enough on his plate, the team’s star player continues to be a focal point, and not in the way Idzik likely envisioned.

Rumors have swirled about CB Darrelle Revis’ future since Idzik’s first day as general manager. In addition to the fact that Revis likely wants a new contract, there have been reports indicating the Jets are open to trading their top corner.

Idzik and head coach Rex Ryan addressed the situation at the NFL Scouting Combine on Thursday.

“Darrelle Revis is a great football player, a great New York Jet, a tremendous asset to our football team, to our organization,” said Idzik. “I don’t know if anything has really changed. We’ve always wanted Darrelle part of our team, that has not changed.”

When the story originated, on the day Idzik was introduced as the Jets’ GM, Ryan called Revis to tell him there was no validity to the story.

“This is what I was telling Darrelle. When I called him I said let’s face it, Idzik hadn’t been on the job 24 hours and now you’re going to get traded? It’s not accurate, plain and simple. I told him that.”

Revis tore his ACL in Week Three last season, and has 98 career passes defensed in five-plus seasons.

“With respect to Darrelle, we’ve always wanted him a part of the New York Jets. Our focus with Darrelle is to aid him in his rehab so he can return to the player that he is,” said Idzik.

Neither Idzik nor Ryan would call Revis “untouchable,” though.

"We’ll always field calls, we’ll always have internal discussions about how we can improve our team day to day, position by position. That’s an ongoing process," said Idzik. "That’s not isolated to any one player, any one position. There’s a lot of 'what ifs' that we’ll be discussing internally."

“I’m going to coach whoever is here. To say absolutely (don’t trade Revis), I’m not going to say this player or that player, if you get Jim Brown in that trade, you look into it,” Ryan joked.

After his time on the podium, Ryan went further, telling reporters that he does not expect his top defensive player to be traded.

“Do I expect there to be a trade for Darrelle Revis? No, but that doesn’t mean something couldn’t come up. Again, we have not discussed trading Darrelle Revis,” he said.

Both members of the Jets’ brass maintained throughout questioning how much respect they have for Revis as a player, and that they’re glad he is still with the Jets.

“Suffice it to say, Darrelle Revis is a great player, a great New York Jet. We’re in the business, quite simply, of acquiring, developing and maintaining good players, great players. Darrelle Revis certainly fits that mold,” Idzik said. “We’re happy to have Darrelle as a Jet and we hope to have Darrelle as a Jet.”

“Darrelle is a tremendous football player and we can’t say that enough,” said Ryan. “I’m glad he’s under contract for the team that I coach.”
