The Rams will hire Lions secondary coach Tim Walton as their defensive coordinator, ESPN’s Adam Schefter first reported.
Walton has coached Detroit’s secondary since 2009, following one season as the defensive coordinator at the University of Memphis.
From 2004-07, Walton was an assistant at the University of Miami (Fla.) and was the Hurricanes’ defensive coordinator in ’07.
The Rams’ defensive coordinator was a shared post in 2012 after Gregg Williams was suspended for the season for his role in the Saints’ bounty program. St. Louis had come close to hiring Rob Ryan in January, but scheme differences kept that from happening. Ryan was then hired as the Saints’ defensive coordinator, and Williams is now with the Titans.
The Rams were 19th in the league in total defense last season, but tied the Broncos for the league lead with 52 sacks.
