The Bears terminated the contract of WR Johnny Knox, the team announced Tuesday.

Late in 2011, Knox suffered a severe back injury. He underwent spinal fusion surgery and did not play in 2012, spending the season on the physically-unable-to-perform list.

In three NFL seasons, Knox had 133 catches for 2,214 yards and 12 touchdowns. In 2011, he averaged 19.6 yards per catch.

"Johnny should be very proud of his accomplishments and what he's done for the city of Chicago and for the Chicago Bears, Bears GM Phil Emery told the team's website. "He did a lot for our fans and a lot for our team. I'm disappointed for him that he won't be able to move forward with the team.

"Johnny will always be a Bear and he will always be welcome here in our practice facility and all of our team events and at games."

On Monday, the Bears signed CB LeQuan Lewis, who played in eight games in 2012 — five with the Buccaneers and three with the Cowboys.
