The Giants released RB Ahmad Bradshaw and DT Chris Canty on Wednesday.

Bradshaw, who turns 27 in March, had 221 carries for 1,015 yards and six touchdowns in 2012, playing in 14 games with 12 starts. He had 23 catches for 245 yards.

“Pound for pound, Bradshaw is one of the toughest football players that I’ve been around,” said GM Jerry Reese. “Ahmad played football like Giants football should be played.”

Last week, Bradshaw had “minor” surgery on his right foot, which is expected to sideline him for 10 weeks. In six seasons with the Giants, Bradshaw has 32 rushing touchdowns. He was due a base salary of $3.75 million for 2013.

Canty, 30, started all nine games he played in 2012 and had 26 tackles and three sacks. He started every game from 2010-11. In 2013, Canty was due a salary of $6.25 million, along with a $250,000 workout bonus.

“Chris Canty is a high-character, highly intelligent young man,” said head coach Tom Coughlin. “He distinguished himself a year ago down the stretch for a number of reasons. One, the quality of his play, and two, is the toughness he displayed, which was a great statement about the quality of the individual.”

The Giants also released DT Martin Parker, who spent the entire 2012 season on injured reserve with a back injury.

The way we see it

These moves were made with the salary cap in mind. The Giants will save nearly $14 million with the two moves. The running back position now belongs to David Wilson and Andre Brown, who both stepped up fill the role with Bradshaw out or on the sideline. Canty's void could be filled by Marvin Austin and Markus Kuhn. Expect the Giants to be active this offseason, although re-signing WRs Hakeem Nicks and Victor Cruz are top priorities.
